New Ambassador of Switzerland in Portugal

Born in 1958 in Visp, Mr. Markus-Alexander Antonietti studied law at the University of Fribourg and visited the Australian National University in Canberra. He holds a degree in law and a diploma in journalism.

Mr. Antonietti joined the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in 1985 and was assigned to Berne and Geneva before being transferred to Kinshasa/Zaire as Deputy Head of Mission/Third Secretary. After his return to headquarters in Berne 1990 he worked as Deputy Head of the News Service and from November 1991 as diplomatic collaborator of the Co-ordinator of International Policy for Refugees. After a temporary transfer to Ankara, he was assigned to the Embassy in Guatemala as Deputy Head of Mission/First Secretary and 1997 until 2002 as Deputy Head of Mission/Counsellor to Pretoria.

From 2002 he was responsible for recruitment and marketing, in 2003 he was appointed as Head of personal planning and Assistant Vice Director of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs. 2006 the Federal Council of Switzerland appointed Mr. Antonietti as Ambassador to Ecuador and 2010 as Ambassador to Venezuela, also responsible for Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. 2013 he became Ambassador to the Czech Republic and 2017 to Peru.
